The inevitable tree

It happens to everyone
birth
growth
life
death
:

I cannot see
how I could
have been
the
exception:

Don’t we all think this at some point

What is within us that refuses all that is rational and inevitable

The last thing that happened?
gravity

It was the day in 2012
the whole island
of Cyprus
went
flying up

Some of us
remained rooted
on the ground
like trees
whose roots

travelled
all the way
to the center
of the earth
and burned in the central lava

For years I just looked up
at the Cyprus
which was my home
thinking of how
I would get a ladder up there

Instead I saw
the opportunity
to join
a flock
of birds who

pulled me
out of the earth
and carried me
and my long
long roots to many countries

unforeseen
However in each
country I visited
the cities were also
floating

Greece
Germany
France
The UK
The USA

New Zealand
Australia
Me on the ground shadowed by cities
float over my head like
luminous moving clouds

I built a ladder
Imagine a tree
climbing up a ladder
It seems impossible
but since it was inevitable

it became the opposite of impossible
Now? I am that olive
tree in the pocket park
of St Andrews
in Bloomsbury, London
